I’ve spent some time surfing around the web for local charities that are uniquely ours–St. Louis based or for St. Louisans.  I came across this one a few days ago:  the St. Louis Society for the Physically Disabled

The mission of the St. Louis Society for the Physically Disabled is to meet the needs of our community by empowering people with physical disabilities through unique and innovative support, recreation, transportation and advocacy.

This was one of the groups I had pegged as interesting and worth looking into, when what should I see when visiting Whole Foods on the 17th, but a big banner declaring that on December 18th, they will donate 5% of sales to this organization!

I have a special place in my heart already for this group without even meeting anyone from it.  First, it is in my own community.  Second, I went to the only elementary school in my small town that had classes for the deaf, for the physically disabled, and for the mentally disabled.  These children all attended my classes, we all knew eachother’s names.  I think that to this day, this worked as its own advocacy for me to realize at a very young age not to look askant at those that are different: they too, are people and have the same feelings and thoughts as me.

This is an important lesson that sadly, many adults never trully learned or took to heart.  It sounds simple, but it’s not.

So—locals–head to the Brentwood Whole Foods today!! (I don’t know if the west county market is doing the same charity or not)
